8-Day Great Migration Safari: Dry Season River Crossing Expedition

8 Days / 7 NightsTarangire → Serengeti → Ngorongoro

Overview

From June to September, the Tanzanian plains transform into a dramatic stage for nature's greatest spectacle. As water sources diminish in the south, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles begin their relentless push northward, seeking greener pastures. Our carefully designed 8-day safari focuses on this high-stakes movement, offering an unparalleled opportunity to witness this iconic natural event firsthand. This itinerary prioritizes maximizing your time along the Mara River by dedicating two full nights to the remote Northern Serengeti. Instead of rushed journeys, our route thoughtfully meanders through the ancient baobab landscapes of Tarangire National Park, explores the prime big cat territories of the central Seronera plains, and culminates with an exclusive early morning descent into the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Arusha Welcome & Tarangire Elephant Tracking

Your professional safari guide from BIG TOURS will warmly greet you at your Arusha hotel to commence your adventure. We'll head directly into Tarangire National Park, where the dry season draws vast numbers of elephants to the park's permanent river systems. Spend the afternoon observing these magnificent herds as they browse beneath ancient baobab trees. In the late afternoon, we'll ascend to the cooler Karatu highlands for dinner and overnight relaxation at Marera Valley Lodge.

  2. Day 2

Highland Journey to Central Serengeti Plains

Departing the highlands, we'll traverse the stunning rim road of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before descending its western slopes into the vast, golden savannas of the Serengeti. Enjoy an extended introductory game drive, tracking elusive cheetahs and resident lion prides through the renowned central Seronera valley. As dusk settles, retreat to Embalakai Serengeti Camp for dinner around a crackling campfire, experiencing your first night under the stars in a luxury tent.

  3. Day 3

Central Serengeti Big Cats to Northern Migration Frontier

Rise with the sun for an early morning game drive, hoping to spot leopards draped on riverine branches. Following a delicious mid-morning brunch back at camp, we'll pack up and begin our deep northward trek towards the remote Kogatende sector. As we cross the Lobo hills, the landscape opens into dramatic granite kopjes, where the vanguard columns of the Great Migration begin to dominate the horizon. Arrive at your northern wilderness camp by dusk for dinner and overnight rest.

  4. Day 4

Full Day Observing Northern Serengeti River Crossings

Dedicate this entire day to tracking the Great Migration along the banks of the Mara River. Your guide will utilize real-time radio updates to locate large gatherings of wildebeest as they mass on the bluffs, poised to plunge into the crocodile-infested waters. We'll enjoy a gourmet packed picnic lunch under a wild acacia tree, continuing our search for stalking predators along the river bends before returning to your northern tented camp for the evening.

  5. Day 5

Second Day of Northern Crossing Action & Predators

Enjoy a second full day immersed in the intricate behaviors of the migrating columns. This extended time allows us to explore remote tracking networks near the Kenyan border, often away from standard tourist routes. Observe massive Nile crocodiles, large lion prides hunting the moving columns, and reclusive leopards utilizing the dense thickets. Spend another tranquil night under canvas in the northern sector.

  6. Day 6

    Southern Safari to Ngorongoro Highlands

Enjoy a beautiful dawn safari drive through the northern valleys as the early sun illuminates the dewy grass. Pack your belongings and begin a slow, highly scenic exit game drive back through the central plains, seeking out any elusive species you've yet to encounter. We'll then wind our way back up into the cool, high-altitude montane country, checking into Ngorongoro Rim Lodge for a crisp evening on the volcanic precipice.

  7. Day 7

    Exclusive Ngorongoro Crater Floor Descent

Descend early into the magnificent floor of the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. This self-contained biosphere offers an incredible opportunity to complete your 'Big Five' sightings, notably showcasing a resident population of endangered black rhinos alongside well-protected hyena clans. Following a scenic picnic lunch by the active hippo pool, we'll ascend the crater rim and transfer to Karatu for your final night of relaxation at Marera Valley Lodge.

  8. Day 8

Maasai Cultural Visit & Airport Departure

Conclude your journey with a respectful and enriching visit to an authentic Maasai Boma community located on the outer highland rim. Observe traditional earth-and-thatch architectures, vibrant local beadwork, and spirited vocal jumping dances. Following an early lunch, enjoy a comfortable drive back to Arusha, with direct drop-off at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departing flight.
