Overview
Arusha National Park is a hidden treasure, frequently overlooked by those on safari, yet it boasts an incredible variety of ecosystems discoverable within a short journey. Situated on the lower slopes of Mount Meru, this park is celebrated for its lush mountain forests, the dramatic Ngurdoto Crater, and the Momella Lakes, often painted pink by flamingo populations. Unlike most Tanzanian Northern Circuit parks, Arusha National Park uniquely offers the chance to explore on foot. This full-day excursion includes an exhilarating guided walking safari, accompanied by a knowledgeable armed park ranger. Traversing the natural environment on foot provides a profoundly different perspective, enabling you to identify animal tracks, observe intricate micro-ecosystems, and safely encounter grazing giraffes and buffalo up close.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Morning Departure & Park Arrival
Your BIG TOURS guide will collect you from your Arusha accommodation. The park is conveniently located just a 45-minute drive away, ensuring a relaxed start to your day without extensive travel time.
Day 1
Guided Bush Walking Safari
Upon completing park registration, we’ll meet our armed park ranger. Together, we’ll embark on a two-hour walking safari, exploring open savannas and dense montane forest. This exceptional opportunity allows for safe, close encounters with wild giraffes, warthogs, and buffalo in their natural habitat.
Day 1
Game Drive & Momella Lakes Exploration
Returning to our safari vehicle, we’ll continue with a game drive towards the picturesque Momella Lakes. These alkaline lakes are a haven for vibrant pink flamingos and, on clear days, offer spectacular distant views of both Mount Meru and Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 1
Wilderness Picnic Lunch
We’ll pause at a designated picnic spot to savor a delicious lunch amidst nature. Be prepared for visits from curious blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys – they are known to be quite interested in your meal!
Day 1
Ngurdoto Crater & Farewell
Our journey continues with an exploration of the Ngurdoto Crater's rim, often affectionately called 'Little Ngorongoro.' Afterwards, we'll begin our exit from the park. You will be dropped off at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your evening flight, or returned to your hotel in Arusha.
